Teerapon Hosanga: The Form of the Formless
19 Aug – 29 Sep 2010

(for Thai please scroll down)

Shadowing the laws of physics and mathematics in creating complex structures, Teerapon Hosanga uses sculpture as a medium to conceptualize growth and flux and the intangible essence of nature.

The complex forms created by repetitive connections among different rigid materials like aluminium, wood, rock and brass tubes do not literally represent the process of growth, even if they often seem to aspire to familiar organic forms, but rather symbolize them. Some works conceptualize the artist’s perception of the dynamic movement that occurs in the creation of nature, whereas others embody his curiosity about how the laws of physics affect the process of making things. While they often symbolize abstract phenomena – lightning, gravity, the growth process – they are at the same time powerful physical objects in their own right. In thrusting into space as though forever on the point of resolving themselves into regular patterns but forever folding in on themselves or remaining as it were incomplete, provisional, deferred, they draw on both the sculptural theories of the 20th Century and the architectural thinking of the 21st.

The Form of the Formless insists on a bold understanding of the power of sculpture to document the passage of time, the changes to our environment, the way events build on events to shape people’s lives — in other words, to tell afresh the story of how we came to be.

The exhibition is curated by Dr Axel Feuss

Teerapon Hosanga:
Human beings live in a baffling world. They need to understand their surroundings, fellow beings, the world and the universe. To answer the question 'Where are we from?' and 'Why are we here?' we apply science, mathematics and logic, based on empirical evidence from observing our environment, or else we create mystifying rituals to make sense of the patterns and processes of nature.

For instance, an object is composed of many substances that can be divided into smaller elements down to the molecular level, which can in turn be classified into three different states - solid, liquid and gas. Another example of our discoveries it that the Earth and the Universe are not only in flux, but their energy and structure als always expanding within complex strutures and systems such as gravitational and magnetic fields. Based on these discoveries, humans continue to explore and search for answers to better predict the patterns of nature. Yet many mysteries remain.

The discoveries of ancient civilisations have had a great influence on human life - mathematical and geometric theorems are the foundation of architecture, giving birth to some of the most awe-inspiring structures in the world, including the Pyramids and the Parthenon. But geometry has also been used to represent the perfection of God in some religions, for instance the geometric patterns of Islamic mural painting and the linear perspective of the European Renaissance.

These examples show that human knowledge and imagination can be conceptualized in tangible objects and can convey messages about the attitudes, beliefs and aesthetics of each creator's area.

In this exhibition, I use mathematics and geometry to describe abstract structures which unfold in the spherical shapes found in objects and natural phenomena. They are often difficult to describe and intangible, and my objective is to conceptualise these intangible aspects. I experiment with the process of creating sculpture in the form of collecting multiple new stereometric layers, reflecting my perception and understanding of those objects and phenomena, as well as of the aesthetics of dynamic movement that occurs in the creation of nature.

It is already the second time that Teerapon Hosanga, still in his period of study, is showcasing works deserving of a lot of attention. In 2005, the young artist presented at the Bangkok University Gallery, under the title Listen in Silence, an installation that conveyed a striking sense for spatial structures. In the white cubic space, braced in every direction on tensioned strings, were amorphous, apparently exploding paper objects. It gave the impression that the observer had found him or herself present in the midst of a momentarily frozen explosion. Essentially the work had been developed as a reaction to the bombing attacks by separatists in Thailand’s southern provinces. The escalating clumps of paper, not only star- but also mushroom-shaped, contained fragments of newspapers, from which reports of current bomb explosions in the south of the country could be read. Similar space installations can otherwise only be found at international biennials, where individual artists are provided with entire spaces.

Teerapon Hosanga: Listen in Silence, 2005
Bangkok University Gallery

The group of six sculptures, which Teerapon has completed for the conclusion of his MFA-Studies at the Silpakorn University of Bangkok Art faculty in the field of sculpture, bears witness to a similarly distinctive feeling for space. With the first sculpture in the group, Half, built up around a large central stone is a half-bowl-shaped stereometric structure, made up of aluminium pipes bound with wire.

Teerapon Hosanga: Half, 2009
rock, wood, string, aluminium, 60 x 30 x 50 cm

This aluminium structure is held in place through intermediary scaffolding made out of wooden skewers, string and resin. It appears as if, through organic or physical procedures, a growth process is developing from an inner seed. The different materials, however, do not impart an actual existing process, but rather a symbolic one: A stone can not grow organically; the aluminium construction is not the accurate copy of actual existent structures of particle physics. Teerapon’s sculpture is a general conceptual model for the phenomenon of growth.

Teerapon Hosanga: Enfold, 2009
rock, wood, string, aluminium, dimension variable

On the second sculpture, Enfold, the outer shell stretches out and unfurls into a spherical shape, whose structure is in turn built up of rhombuses, prisms and similar triangular shapes. Some crystals grow in this manner through agglomeration of new stereometric layers. To this end it is not actually important, whether organic growth or chemical-physical processes are intended by Teerapon’s conceptual models. What is meant are general growth processes found in nature. His sculptures are conceptual models for a phenomenon almost unobservable by humans due to its gradualness.

Teerapon Hosanga: Circle, 2009
rock, wood, string, aluminium, 270 x 270 x 220 cm

In the third sculpture, Circle, the process of expansion is completed. The inner seed now sits in the more-than two meter high sculpture like a spider in a web. At last it becomes clear, that for Teerapon the point is not simply to tell a story and develop a prototype for processual phenomena. He is showing his ability to describe abstract structures in space. In doing so he stands in the tradition of internationally known artists, who in the 1960’s began to abstractly describe phenomena such as flotation, movement and growth in classy as well as minimalist metal structures. The Germans Hans Uhlmann and Norbert Kricke and Americans George Rickey and Kenneth Snelson are worth mentioning here.

Kenneth Snelson

Teerapon Hosanga: Lightning, 2009
rock, wood, string, aluminium, 90 x 220 x 180 cm

In the second group of sculptures, Teerapon is more interested in other phenomena in nature. The motivation for the sculpture Lightning was the problem of describing the phenomenon of lightning. The sculpture is an aluminium and wire structure, which unfolds out of a high-set inner core, and out of a tightly compressed bundle of short aluminium pipes sloping downwards in increasingly longer and more open sections of the metal framework. Dynamics and speed are conveyed here, through geometric-abstract structures. The stable balance of the stone, pushed out of its direction of fall, makes clear the phenomenon of gravity. The point for Teerapon, moreover, is to challenge the laws of physics in his art, and through the medium of sculpture to portray a downwards movement. Here too, he stands in the tradition of eminent sculptors such as David Smith and Barnett Newman who, in their sculptures, turn the laws of physics (carry and load, balance and equilibrium) on their heads.

Teerapon Hosanga: Earth and Moon, 2009
rock, wood, string, aluminium, 270 x 150 x 120 cm

With the sculpture Earth and Moon Teerapon makes use of a pedestal in order to portray the phenomenon of gravitation between the planet Earth and its moon. The talent of the artist is surprising in that, alongside the literal theme and that of the construction model known from the previous sculptures, in the center a wholly simple, strict and serial module out of parallel aluminium rods is used, reminiscent of minimalist structures.

Teerapon Hosanga: Beware it is Life, 2009
wooden trunk, wood, string, brass tube, aluminium, steel, stone, 200 x 80 x 90 cm

In the sculpture Beware it is Life, a naturally grown tree trunk stands in the centre of the abstract growth process, which has been developed in two directions. When we think of the history of sculpture in the 20th Century, Henry Moore’s late variations of increasingly more abstract lying figures (Reclining Figures) of the 1960’s come to mind. With these Moore was less concerned with a copy of the human body, as rather with general phenomena of ponderation, gravitation, the representation of natural dimensions, accomplishment of the space, and the “multi-sidedness” of a sculpture. Apparently for Teerapon, too, these basic problems of sculpture have a strong importance. Their unfolding and impact in the space stands in close relationship to spatial structures, which we had already noted at his 2005 installation Listen in Silence.

Teerapon clearly refers to the theory of sculpture of the 20th Century. Nevertheless his works are highly current. In the past years in international architecture, buildings have been constructed that have a highly sculptural character. Teerapon’s light, rhomboidal, light-flooded structures are close to architectural blueprints by Frank O. Gehry, abb architects, Vito Acconci or NOX architects from the last decade. His steep sloping spaces and dimensions, the “multi-sidedness” of his sculptures, and the seemingly organic growth of architectural spaces in every direction and every dimension are today found more so in avant-garde architecture than in the field of sculpture. As sculptures, but also as possible architectural models, Teerapon’s works seem therefore in every way surprising and modern.

FRIDA KAHLO. RETROSPEKTIVE
30. APRIL - 9. AUGUST 2010
MARTIN-GROPIUS-BAU, BERLIN

1943 zeigte Peggy Guggenheim ihre Bilder in der Ausstellung "Art of this Century" in New York.
