WANDA LANDOWSKA

Wanda Landowska, Pianistin und Komponistin, wurde 1879 in Warschau geboren. Bereits mit vier Jahren begann sie Klavier zu spielen und wurde von bedeutenden polnischen Pianisten ausgebildet. Ab 1895 studierte sie in Berlin. Seit 1900 in Paris ansässig, widmete sie sich der Erforschung der Alten Musik und historischer Instrumente mit dem Ziel, vor allem die Musik von Johann Sebastian Bach auf einem bis dahin wenig populären Instrument, dem Cembalo, wieder in ihrem originalen Klang hörbar zu machen. In Breslau präsentierte sie 1912 das von Ihr entwickelte Pleyel-Cembalo als Soloinstrument. 1913 in Berlin auf den ersten Lehrstuhl für Cembalo berufen, ging sie 1920 zurück nach Frankreich. Von den Nationalsozialisten verfolgt, emigrierte sie 1941 in die USA.

The pianist and composer Wanda Landowska was born in Warsaw in 1879. She was just four when she began to play the piano, and henceforth she took lessons from important Polish pianists. In 1895 she began her studies in Berlin. From 1900 onwards she lived in Paris and dedicated her studies to researching early music and historical instruments – primarily the music of Johann Sebastian Bach on a hitherto somewhat neglected instrument, the harpsichord – with the aim of reproducing the music in its original sound. In 1912, in Breslau, she developed and presented a Pleyel harpsichord as a solo instrument. In 1913 she was appointed to the first chair of harpsichord studies in Berlin: and in 1920 she returned to France. Following persecution by the National Socialists she emigrated to the USA in 1941.

MARTA KLONOWSKA - "MY GLASS ANIMALS OPEN A NEW REALITY" 

Sie erweckt Tiere zum Leben, die seit Jahrhunderten auf Gemälden eine Nebenrolle spielen. Vor allem Hunde, die auf Bildnissen der Renaissance und des Barocks den dargestellten Personen zusätzliche Bedeutung verleihen oder die in ihrer Zeit schlichtweg Mode sind, überträgt sie in lebensgroße Skulpturen aus Glas. Marta Klonowska, 1964 in Warschau geboren, studierte 1987-89 an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Breslau/Wrocław und 1989-97 an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf als Meisterschülerin bei A.R. Penck. Die Künstlerin lebt und arbeitet in Düsseldorf und Warschau. Ihre Plastiken, die zusammen mit den Reproduktionen der Gemälde auch Installationen bilden, befinden sich international in Privatsammlungen und Museen.

Marta Klonowska brings back to life animals that have only played secondary roles in pictures for hundreds of years. These are primarily dogs that gave additional significance to people in Renaissance and baroque portraits, or which were simply all the rage at the time. She turns them into a life-size glass sculptures. Marta Klonowska was born in Warsaw in 1964. Between 1987 and 1989 she studied at the Academy of Pictorial Arts in Breslau/Wrocław and at the Düsseldorf Academy of Arts as a master student under A.R. Penck from 1989 to 1997. She lives and works in Düsseldorf and Warsaw. Her sculptures, which also make up installations with reproductions of the paintings, can also be found in private collections and museums in many countries.

DAS SAMMLEREHEPAAR JOANNA UND MARIUSZ BEDNARSKI REDET ÜBER POLNISCHE PLAKATKUNST

Joanna und Mariusz Bednarski besitzen eine der größten Sammlungen polnischer Plakatkunst. Ihre Sammlung umfasst sechs- bis siebentausend Plakate, die sie seit den 1980er-Jahren zusammengetragen haben. Sie betreiben heute eine Galerie für polnische Plakatkunst, die Pigasus Polish Poster Gallery in der Danziger Straße in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg, sowie einen Online-Shop. Die Webseite ihrer Galerie, www.pigasus-gallery.de, fungiert zugleich als Künstlerliste und Bildergalerie ihrer Sammlung. Weit über einhundert polnische Plakatkünstler sind dort mit jeweils Dutzenden von Bildbeispielen vertreten. Mit Joanna Bednarska und Mariusz Bednarski sprach Axel Feuß für Porta Polonica.

THE COLLECTORS JOANNA AND MARIUSZ BEDNARSKI TALK ABOUT POLISH POSTER ART

Joanna and Mariusz Bednarski possess one of the largest collections of Polish poster art. Their collection comprises between 6000 and 7000 posters that they have collected since the 1980s. Today they run a gallery for Polish poster art,the Pigasus Polish Poster Gallery in Danziger Straße in the Berlin suburb of Prenzlauer Berg, and an online shop. Their gallery homepage, www.pigasus-gallery.de, simultaneously functions as an artists list and a picture gallery of their collection. Way over 100 Polish poster artists are represented, each of which has dozens of pictures of their work. Axel Feuß from Porta Polonica spoke with Joanna Bednarska and Mariusz Bednarski.

Kunstmuseum Bochum

KUNSTMUSEUM BOCHUM - DIE SAMMLUNG POLNISCHER KUNST

Seit Gründung der ursprünglich so genannten „Städtischen Kunstgalerie“ in Bochum im Jahr 1960 legt deren erster Direktor, Peter Leo, im Rahmen einer weitgreifenden europäischen Ausrichtung der künftigen Sammlung ein besonderes Schwergewicht auf die Kunst der Ostblockstaaten, da diese in westdeutschen Museumssammlungen unterrepräsentiert ist. Die Sammeltätigkeit wird durch Einzel- und Gruppenausstellungen von Künstlern aus den sozialistischen Staaten mit Leben erfüllt und von den nachfolgenden Direktoren, dem aus der Tschechoslowakei stammenden Peter Spielmann und dem jetzigen Direktor, Hans Günter Golinski, fortgeführt. Heute besitzt das Kunstmuseum Bochum eine Sammlung von über einhundert Werken polnischer Künstlerinnen und Künstler.

THE BOCHUM ART MUSEUM  - THE COLLECTION OF POLISH ART

When the so-called “City Art Gallery” was set up in 1960 its first director Peter Leo elected to give it a far-reaching European orientation with a particular emphasis on the art of Eastern Bloc states, because this area was underrepresented in West German museum collections. The museum’s collecting activities were enlivened by solo and group exhibitions featuring artists from socialist states: and Peter Leo’s strategy was continued by his successors Peter Spielmann (who came from the then Czechoslovakia) and the current director, Hans Günter Golinski. The Kunstmuseum Bochum (Bochum Art Gallery) currently owns a collection of more than one hundred works by Polish artists.
