Daniel Chodowiecki - The Polonica
“Despite his Polish father and his Polish family name, and despite his French grandmother Chodowiecki was unmistakably an artist from Northern Germany. Thanks to his many thousand drawings and cameo engravings he became one of the greatest reporters of his time in Germany.” Thus begins a small volume about the graphic artist and engraver Daniel Chodowiecki (1726-1801) that was published precisely 100 years ago. Indeed, all three nations regard him as one of their own. Born in Danzig (Gdansk), he lived and worked in Berlin from 1743 onwards. With his drawings of his journey to Danzig in 1773 and his more than 20 etchings he created “Polonica”, i.e. motifs with Polish portraits. He was buried in Berlin in the cemetery of the French Reformed Church in Chausseestraße.
